The purpose of this protocol is to examine the course, determinants, mechanisms, and outcomes of diabetic kidney disease and its relationship with other diabetic complications. The mechanisms of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and its relationship with other diabetes complications are not well understood. We developed a detailed multidimensional phenotype of DKD over many years in an American Indian cohort with type 2 diabetes. In this secondary research study, we wish to continue our highly productive research on DKD and related complications using the samples and data collected in earlier and currently ongoing studies.

Eligibility

The study population includes 377 American Indians (131 men, 246 women) aged >=18 years old who participated in any of the five kidney study protocols we conducted between 1988 and 2020.

Most participants had type 2 diabetes and various stages of DKD. All participants were selected to have some Pima/Tohono O odham heritage. They were recruited from the Gila River and Ak-Chin Indian Communities. Some were also living off reservation.

A large number of the original subjects have died or are lost to follow-up. However, we remain in contact with many of the participants from the most recent protocol, 13-DK-N151. We will contact the available patients whose data we intend to use in this study and invite them to participate in the current study.
